Alumni News: Whatever happened to Dr. Wallace Miller, Sr.?
Summa Foundation works to support medical education among its other pursuits. The Foundation established the Summa Alumni Association in 2004 to keep former, current and retired Summa physicians and residents connected to one another and keep them up-to-date on the latest happenings at Summa Health System.
This month, we feature Dr. Wallace Miller, Sr. who interned in radiology at Summa Akron City Hospital in 1956 after graduating from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He followed his roommate and fraternity brother, Dr. Taylor ‘Butch” Brandfass, to Akron because Dr. Brandfass’s brother worked at Akron City Hospital and had the authority to hire interns. Dr. Miller chose the field of radiology because he loved the emerging challenges (1960’s) of the field and the detective work that was needed to make a diagnosis.
After his internship, Dr. Miller returned to Philadelphia to perform his residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) and has worked there since 1958. He is the chief of diagnostic radiology, vice chair of the department of radiology, and chief of the chest section within the department.
He received every teaching award that HUP offers and has been distinguished in his career as the author of 125 published articles, 25 book chapters, and 4 textbooks on radiology. In addition, he served as a visiting professor 47 times in the U.S. and abroad including Canada, Japan, Brazil, Thailand and Mexico.
